PROJECT: SPURO
Tracing Battery Supply Chain with Raw Material Analysis

in short
RESEARCH OBJEcTIVES
Objective 1
Develop analytical methods for determining the origin, quality, and recycling content of battery raw materials using element and isotope trace analysis.
Objective 2
Create a reliable and verifiable certification system for primary and secondary (recycled) battery materials.
Objective 3
Enhance transparency and sustainability along the entire battery supply chain through scientific and industrial collaboration.
Description
The Project in detail
The Challenge
Global battery supply chains are complex, and the origin and quality of raw materials are often difficult to trace. Current verification methods rely heavily on documentation and self-declaration, which can be incomplete or even manipulated.
To ensure both quality and sustainability, new technologies are needed that can identify the true source and composition of battery materials—independent of supply chain paperwork.
PEM Motion’s Approach
As an industrial partner, PEM Motion leads the subproject focused on the practical application of trace-based analysis methods within real-world production environments. Drawing on its expertise in battery development and validation, PEM Motion ensures that the developed methods are technically feasible, industry-ready, and can be integrated into existing quality assurance and certification processes.
By combining scientific precision with practical implementation, PEM Motion helps turn the “chemical fingerprint” of materials into a reliable tool for transparency and sustainability in battery production.
