At the BMW Group, we are pursuing new directions in hardware development.
An innovative approach is the introduction of agile development methods, which we implement together with partners. By switching to the agile approach, the first prototypes can be produced and tested considerably faster, thus significantly increasing the efficiency of our development processes.

Together we worked on solutions to ensure that our core competencies as a specialist for automation solutions will also be utilized in the future.
We have developed comprehensive solutions for the innovative automation of battery pack assembly and are prepared for the special challenges in the production of alternative drives. PEM Motion supported us right from the start in designing the product technology for the most cost-efficient series production possible - our first test drive? Still in the production hall.

“When designing and ramping up the necessary equipment, speed and flexibility are the most critical factors to consider,” states Dr. Michael Salmen, head of the InnoLab Battery at Daimler Truck: “We want to optimize product features, test different manufacturing processes, and optimize product features, test various manufacturing methods, and industrialize production processes. Our goal is to be a pioneer in the commercial vehicle industry and offer competitively differentiated battery systems.”
The “Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components” (PEM) chair at RWTH Aachen and PEM Motion are working together with Daimler Truck AG on the pilot production of battery cells. They support the world’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer in setting up an “InnoLab Battery” at the Mannheim site focusing on the planning of production lines, procurement, space, and building planning, as well as in the design of a production digital twin.

Henkel has partnered with PEM Motion to pioneer the development of new battery technologies, research material requirements for implementation and increase the sustainability and safety of batteries. PEM Motion will contribute with consulting and engineering services in the field of electromobility – from product design and business development to prototyping and testing.
By introducing “agile processes” and sharing equipment and resources, the partners aim to address specific challenges such as battery safety and viable battery disassembly for repair and recycling.
